The Victorian government has sparked debate over its proposed mandate to promote recreational shooting to children as young as 12.

WA president Paul Fitzgerald from the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia told 6PR Breakfast hosts Karl and Will that the initiative would be beneficial, encouraging children to get outdoors and learn the realities of responsible firearm use.

“The real use of firearms has a purpose and it teaches them discipline, responsibility and confidence”, he said.
