Amazon is facing scrutiny as the TWU protests over claims it operates outside expected Australian safety standards.

Tim Dawson, the WA Branch Secretary of the TWU, spoke to 6PR Breakfast with hosts Millsy and Karl to announce that they are demanding the government and Amazon overhaul the company’s safety standards.

He stated, “We have a standard in Australia that we expect for workers to be employed under and when you start putting them outside the fair work rules, then they have no rights and they get exploited.”

Amazon subsequently issued a statement in response to the union’s claims.

On the record statement, attributable to Michael Cooley, Director of Public Policy, Amazon Australia:

The claims made by the Transport Workers Union are false and paint a misleading picture of what it’s like to deliver for Amazon. Delivery drivers are paid fairly and competitively, including in accordance with prescribed government rates, for the time they spend delivering Amazon packages. The safety of drivers and the community is of the utmost importance, and we prioritise safeguarding them in every aspect of our operations. The fact is, Amazon is providing quality work for thousands of Australians across the country, including for those delivering packages to our customers.
