Cigarette butts are the worst individual littered item in WA according to the 2025 Clean Up Australia report.

Pip Kiernan, Chair of Clean Up Australia, explained to 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl that while the butts may look harmless with their paper cover, they are plastic. 

She warned: “They shed microfibres, they leach toxins, they often end up in the stomachs of birds and marine life and wildlife so they don’t belong in the environment.”
