Westpac’s branch freeze dismissed as ‘rhetoric’ as critics demand real service changes
Westpac’s commitment to pause further regional branch closures until 2030 has drawn criticism, despite the move following a federal report on regional bank impacts last year.

Robert Barwick, National Chairman of the Australian Citizens Party, told Perth Live host Oliver Peterson that the banks are simply engaging in damage control, trying to appear to be meeting public expectations but ultimately falling short.
“Cash is at risk, the banks indicated years ago they wanted to get rid of it and now their backtracking but that’s in rhetoric, what are their actual actions. We need to be putting pressure on the banks to go back to opening proper services,” he said.
