The State government announced upgrades to the SmartRider system back in 2017, but despite a trial being underway, some details of the upgrade are still a mystery.

Steve Martin, Shadow Minister for Transport, Ports and Communities, explained to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that the government has had plenty of time to get this right, however he is still waiting for confirmation on two key points: whether users can ‘tap and go’ with a digital SmartRider, and if not, will the SmartRider discount still be included on digital bankcards?

“Here we are nearly in 2026, and we still don’t know the details,” he said.
