Vexatious restraining orders bench police due to gun law reform

The police union is concerned that some WA police officers are unable to perform their duties due to the provisions of the new firearms act, which automatically revokes firearm access for anyone subject to a restraining order.

WA Police Union President Dave Flaherty informed Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that the primary concern is the use of vexatious or vindictive restraining order applications against police.
As the legislation provides no exemptions, even nuisance applications can force an officer off duty.
“It’s an abuse of the process, a process that’s been put in place for good reason, is now being used for ulterior motives,” he said.
