The discovery of an empty and freshly abandoned narco submarine off the Solomon Islands has led to beliefs that up to $700 million worth of cocaine is en route to Australia.

John Coyne, Director of the National Security program at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, explained to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that these vessels are deliberately engineered to avoid detection by patrol boats, and their presence across the Pacific is not surprising.

He concluded, “Australians love to use cocaine, they love to use lots of it more regularly, and they’re price insensitive, they’re quite happy to pay more for it than anywhere else in the world.”
