Locals shocked by 4.8 earthquake in central Wheatbelt

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Wyalkatchem at 2 am this morning, waking residents and sending tremors that were felt as far as Perth.

Paige from Wyalkatchem Roadhouse described the event to 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl, stating,
“I don’t think it was big enough to cause major damage, but it was enough to shake the whole area and wake people up; it was like a loud rumble.”

Senior Seismologist Dr. Trevor Allen further informed Millsy and Karl that while 130 earthquakes have been reported in the Wyalkatchem area over the past year, this is the strongest ever recorded in the town.
He added, “The Wheatbelt area of Western Australia is actually one of the most seismically active areas in the country.”
