Former WA Premier Colin Barnett attempted to merge councils during his premiership but faced considerable resistance.
He informed 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl that the 138 local councils are unnecessary and that a reduction in their number would offer the community better services at a lower cost.
“I think people now are starting to realise that they’re just not viable, they’re not concentrating on local issues as they should, they have got involved in other issues like banning nuclear energy or the Australian flag,” he said.
