The WA Police commissioner intends to lobby the Government for stricter legislation regarding offences committed against police officers, particularly concerning the distinction between manslaughter and murder charges.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch clarified to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that, given the inherent risks of their profession, incidents resulting in the death of a police officer ought to be evaluated under different legal considerations.

“Is the law right that if someone is committing a crime and they are aware of the presence of a police officer and they are trying to get away, and that police officer dies in that action, should the charge remain murder? My position is that it should” he said.
