A staggering number of retired renters are living below the poverty line

Confronting statistics show that two-thirds of retirees renting in the private market are living in poverty, and those statistics are even more dire when looking specifically at retired women in the private rental sector.

Joey Maloney, Deputy Program Director at the Grattan Institute, explained to Perth Live host Oliver Peterson how government policies at all levels have been failing on this issue for a long time.

“What we really need to be doing is building more social housing but also looking to protect people in the private rental market with an increase in rent assistance,” he said.
