Shorten promises services rebuild as waiting times blow out

Simon Beaumont

As more and more Australians find themselves waiting for hours and even days to receive services like Medicare and Centrelink, the Federal Services Minister has pledged to make changes while continuing to blame previous Liberal governments for the issue.

Services Minister Bill Shorten will boost Services Australia by around 3000 people in an effort to deal with ever-growing waiting times.

Mr Shorten told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings a number of adverse issues were behind the increase, including Covid, new childcare rebates and the Morrison Government’s “illegal” Robodebt scheme.

“Since becoming Minister I’ve become increasingly aware that it’s not a popular thing to say, but we need more public servants,” Mr Shorten said.
