The state government has announced an additional $5 million to boost Western Australia’s shark hazard mitigation efforts.

Click play to hear how the funding will be used.

As part of the funding injection, Surf Life Saving Western Australia (SLSWA) will receive $2.3 million to expand aerial surveillance and increase helicopter patrols across metropolitan and South-West beaches.

SLSWA general manager Chris Peck told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that drone operators are harder to come by on weekdays.

“Where we’ve got the gaps [of drone operators] is during the week, in that Monday to Friday. What we know is people are using those beaches during the week,” he said.

The additional funding will help SLSWA bolster both drone and patrol operations to enhance beach safety throughout the week.
