Western Australia Day: Colin Barnett reflects on the holiday’s renaming

Simon Beaumont

Colin Barnett has explained the importance behind the state’s public holiday being renamed on its 11th celebration.

The day was recognised as Foundation Day before 2012 until then-Premier Barnett renamed it.

Mr Barnett told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings that the decision behind the name change was to celebrate all West Australians.

“I thought it was time to move beyond simply a historical recognition which is still important,” he said.

“To shift it more to celebrating what’s good about life in Western Australia.”
