A legal battle between a social media giant and Australia’s richest man has come to an abrupt end.

More than two years ago, FMG Group boss Andrew Forrest brought a criminal case against Facebook’s parent company Meta over dodgy advertisements using his name and image; it had been alleged the social media platform was criminally reckless by failing to take steps to stop the scam ads.

But after assessing the brief of evidence the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions has today discontinued all charges and the case has been dropped.

Mr Forrest has delivered a scathing statement in return, saying Meta and other platforms are operating “beyond the laws of Australia” while vulnerable victims are losing $3.1 billion to scams every year.
