WA’s Inspector of Custodial Services has echoed growing calls for the closure of the notorious Unit 18 youth detention wing at Casuarina Prison.

Eamon Ryan told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings Unit 18 is being treated as a last-resort destination for troubled youth detainees due to a lack of proper infrastructure.

“Ultimately, I think they failed this boy,” Mr Ryan said.

“A lot of people have few sympathies for many of these young people because they have committed some very serious offences, but at the end of the day we simply have to do better.”
