Vladimir Putin renewed his usual strongman tactics through an international address overnight, claiming the near-uprising by the Wagner Group was expected by the Kremlin.

The Russian leader had been apparently put on the back foot on the weekend as units from the infamous paramilitary unit started making their way towards Moscow.

Nine News European Correspondent Brett McLeod told Karl and Gena on 6PR Breakfast no matter which way Putin tried to turn the events, they had left him weakened.

“Certainly Putin’s leadership can’t go back to where it was; it’s obvious whoever has the guns in Russia right now has the power,” Mr McLeod said.
