After falling apart early in the tournament, Australia have not managed to earn a Hail Mary slot in the Rugby World cup.

All hopes were on Portugal to win against Fiji by eight points or more, but despite the European team reaching a relatively new height in the Cup, it was too good to be true.

Nine’s World Cup correspondent Nick McCardle told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast fans were on the edge of their seat as Portugal battled hard.

“I’m sure the Wallabies were sitting in their hotel thinking, ‘Jeez, we could be on here’,” Mr McCardle said.
