Vale John Gilmour

Legendary distance runner, POW, World War II Veteran and proud West Australian, John Gilmour passed away at the age of 99 on Wednesday. One of many who looked up to Mr Gilmour for inspiration and encouragement is fellow runner, Ray Boyd and he shared a tribute to the great man on 6PR Breakfast.

“All the words you think of, they get thrown around a bit. If you look at ‘courage’, ‘persistence’, ‘determination’, they just sit over him like a badge of honour,” Boyd told Steve and Baz.

“He’s a West Australian distance runner’s version of Kevin Bacon, there’s not too many people who haven’t got a connection with him in one shape or form,” Boyd reflected.
