“Our priority is public safety”: Deputy Top Cop defends protest response

Police concede dealing with large-scale protests is a balancing act between people’s right to protest, and the public’s right to go about their business.

There were major disruptions in the CBD on Friday, as protest group Extinction Rebellion held demonstrations at the Esplanade.

They’re demanding governments take emergency action on climate change.

Deputy Police Commissioner Col Blanch told Gareth Parker he’s not going to second-guess decisions made on the day.
