How can a one night stay in hospital cost an insurer $12,000?

The head of private health fund HBF concedes the cost of health care in Australia is high as questions are asked over a $12,000 bill.

A fund-member who recently underwent a minor procedure at St John of God Subiaco that required an overnight stay has questioned the $12,000 charge.

She was happy with her care and wasn’t require to pay a gap – but says the cost appears excessive.

HBF CEO John Van Der Wielen told Gareth Parker on Mornings overall cost is a broader health issue.

St John of God Subiaco says it’s happy to review the cost, with hospital CEO Shirley Bowen saying it doesn’t appear right and will look into it further.
