Perth local Jai Hindley has set the stage at the Tour de France, earning himself the yellow jersey after a barnstorming fifth stage sprint.

Jai’s former cycling club president James Buchannan told Mick and Gena on 6PR Breakfastthey couldn’t have pictured a better outcome.

“Talk about threading the needle,” Mr Buchannan said.

“You know, Jai would have been nervous about his first tour, and now five stages in he’s at the top of the top.”

6PR and Nine News reporter Paddy Sweeney said it’s a remarkable effort from the 27-year-old.

“He was not expected to be part of this breakaway, and now he’s put his name on the map,” Mr Sweeney said.

“He’s gone form a guy with not too many expectations in his first tour, to all of a sudden being a man with a target on his back.”
