Motorcycle fatalities spike sparks concern over driver behaviour

Following the Road Safety Commission revealing the high number of motorcycle road fatalities earlier this week, the focus has shifted to drivers behaviour on the roads.

Managing Director of Drive Safe Australia John Van Leeuwen told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons, “There’s no ifs, buts or maybes that the statistics we are looking at are quite shocking.”

“The whole motorcycle versus car issue is very complicated…Car drivers are quite disengaged from driving, they’re very distracted and they’re doing everything but driving. So they’re a part of the problem. But you see some appalling behaviour from people riding motorcycles as well so there’s contributing factors from both sides.”

“Car drivers have to take part of the responsibility and motorcyclists have to be extra defensive,” Mr Van Leeuwen said.
