Dr Karl’s stern words for Kalgoorlie’s gold crims

One of WA’s oldest primary schools could soon be demolished thanks to a previously-reported illegal gold refining operation.

Nearly two dozen people were arrested in Kalgoorlie in January after large amounts of toxic chemicals including mercury were found on the site.

Australia’s preeminent scientist, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast the contamination could spell danger for much longer than it takes to flush out the area.

“[Mercury poisoning} last popped up on Minamata Island and caused all sorts of issues like paralysis and impairment to their vision and hearing; there’s very serious consequences,” Dr Karl said.
