Commemorating the Irish Bride Ship girls that helped populate Geraldton and Perth

Article image for Commemorating the Irish Bride Ship girls that helped populate Geraldton and Perth

It’s a remarkable story that not many West Australians are aware of. Six young women sailed to WA from Sydney from the infamous work or ‘poor’ houses of Ireland to populate a male-dominated Australia.

Fred Rae and the WA Irish Famine Commemoration group are hosting an event this Saturday alongside the Geraldton Historical Society to remember the voyage of the Irish Bride Ship girls and try to find some of the descendants from the party

Fred spoke to Simon Beaumont and Afternoons on 6PR

The commemoration will be at the St Francis Xavier Cathedral in Geraldton, commencing at 1230. RSVP to Rita Stinson at ritastinson@hotmail.com or call 9924 3217
