Expert claims fire ant eradication in Australia is no longer achievable

A biosecurity expert claims the fire ant infestation in Queensland has exceeded eradication levels and that the programme should shift to a containment approach.

Jim Willmott, a former biosecurity officer, told Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that the 2032 eradication goal is unrealistic and the infestation is likely to breach the Queensland border.
‘They now cover 20 times more area than the initial 40,000-hectare infestation that was detected back in 2001,” he said.
