It has been revealed that forty percent of maths teachers in Australian schools lack qualifications to teach the subject.

Director of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute Tim Marchant told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live, “It’s very concerning because we believe all students deserve to be taught by a teacher that is trained in their discipline area.”

“For teachers already in the workforce that are teaching out of field, we’re proposing upskilling to give them the confidence to teach mathematics.”

“I think we need to look for long-term solutions, the problem has been developing for 10 to 20 years so we aren’t going to solve that problem straight away but we need to make some big decisions now as a country to solve the problem going forward,” Mr Marchant said.
