Lieutenant Commander Robert Rankin

Robert Rankin was a naval officer in the Royal Australian Navy.

Rankin assumed command of the Yarra on 11th February 1942.  While escorting a small convoy from Java to Australia they encountered a Japanese squadron.  The Yarra fought hard but the convoy was quickly overwhelmed.  Rankin gave the order to abandon ship however a direct hit on the bridge killed him a few minutes later.

Only 13 of the 151 on board were rescued.
