Cowra breakout – Military History

On the 5th August 1944 over 1100 Japanese prisoners of war attempted to escape a war camp near Cowra, New South Wales.

Soldiers Benjamin Hardy and Ralph Jones where killed during the escape attempt. They were posthumously awarded the George Cross for gallantry.
