What is Wayne Swan doing?

On the eve of what is being called the toughest budget in 25 years, why is the treasurer giving a hand out to families that will cost $400 million a year? Paul Murray spoke to Julie Novak from the Institute of Public Affairs about the $820 payment to families.


As the Treasurer prepares to announce that he will pay families with school children $820 a year to compensate them for educational costs, welfare groups want Mr Swan to scrap the idea of cutting $60 from the single parent benefit.
