Scarborough in Froccer upset

One of the greatest rivalries in modern day hybrid sports was contested over the weekend with Scarborough Surf Life Saving Club using the home ground advantage of Butler reserve to shut out City of Perth Surf Club in overtime to claim the 15th annual Froccer final.

The passion and (abundant) self belief of City Beach SLSC had seen it dominate this event over the past 4 years but as the two teams took to the field in traditional dress the steely gaze in the eyes of the Scarborough team showed they hadn't come to play but to absolve themselves of past losses.

From the opening whistle it was apparent this game was going to be a battlefield void of standard clichéd plays, especially when it was agreed that it was to played over four quarters and not the traditional two halves.

Both of the teams game styles were sharp, avant guard and colourful and the way they played the game wasn't bad either.

At the close of regular time scores were tied at 2-2. The sloppy defence from both sides no surprise to most of the crowd as many defenders dresses did seem to fit a little more snugly than in previous years.

In a show of sportsmanship rarely seen in modern sports the teams, wishing to see this Herculean tournament decided, voted to play five minutes each way. The democratic union of comradery and competitiveness moved the crowd with this journalist overhearing one parent tell his son "see that mate, you'll always remember this day. That's why Froccer is the peoples game"

In the end the extra ten minutes was too much for City SLSC and the Scarborough faithful were lifted from their deckchairs after a strike, that may or may not have been deliberately aimed at the goals, slid past City's keeper after three minutes of extra time.

City's soul was crushed and they offered no real offensive pressure in the remaining extra time, handing Scarborough a rare win in this year's Froccer annual championship.

The growing spectacle of seeing grown men run around in (sometimes) borrowed dresses has inspired many over the years to say "Hey! Yes I'm not that good at any individual sport but by hell if I create my own combination of a sport and past-time I'm sure I can dominate it"

For this reason we salute Froccer and those who play it because at the end of the day the real winner is Froccer.
