Labor leadership battle

Date

Kevin Rudd says that his Labor leadership aspirations should be cryogenically frozen. That assumes they’ll one day be thawed and my guess is that process will begin within days of this year’s federal election. By then Labor will have been thrashed at the polls and Julia Gillard will have been consigned to the dustbin of Australia’s political history. Who will replace her as party leader? Surely her deputy Wayne Swan, will be banished with her. After his role in the political assassination of K. Rudd he could hardly be trusted in the trenches by anyone aspiring to the party’s top job. The Governor General’s son in law Bill Shorten would fancy his chances and after him, no one else appeals. For Rudd to even consider being drafted he would have to possess a death wish. Given the latest opinion polls nothing can save Labor from defeat this year. Rudd is a highly intelligent creature who does not appeal as someone willing to take possession of a poisoned challis. He’ll be back, on his own terms, in his own time and only after his detractors have been forced to digest a huge slice of humble pie.
