Eagles win historical Western Derby XLVI

West Coast has won Derby 46 and the last Western Derby at Domain Stadium by 30-points over Fremantle on Sunday afternoon.

West Coast’s reliable forward Josh Kennedy kicked three goals in his first game back from a calf injury sustained in Round 10, but Shannon Hurn’s 34 disposals and 14 marks earned him the Ross Glendinning medal in the 5.14 (44) to 11.8 (74) win.

Fremantle didn’t kick a goal until half way through the second quarter, but they leaped into the second half to get within a few goals with time left to steal the win. But the Eagles quickly snapped two goals in the final term to extend their lead.

Fremantle’s Lachie Neale clocked up 34 disposals and Michael Walters kicked a couple of impressive goals.
But Peter Sumich in expert comments was critical of some of the West Coast players.

The Dockers’ Lee Spurr and David Mundy were back in their side and Nick Suban played his milestone 150th game.

Hear how the game played out

Liam Duggan earned 3 votes for the Ross Glendinning Medal and told 6PR after the game that he and Shannon Hurn are gelling well in the backline.

“Our method really stood up today and our effort and contest around the ball was really strong where we were lacking is a bit of polish on the finish and a bit of connection with our forwards,” David Mundy told 6PR after the game.

“We walk away thinking ‘Gee Whiz, we had an opportunity to win that game’,” Ross Lyon said after the game.

Hear what Adam Simpson had to say after the win.

Elliot Yeo was meant to play his 100th game but was a late out with a minor leg injury sustained in last week’s Port Adelaide loss.
Adam Simpson told us before the game “He’s one of our better players this year, if not our best”.

Fremantle CEO Steve Rosich told us about the club’s excitement to be heading to the new Perth Stadium.

Ahead of the last Western Derby at Domain Stadium, former West Coast Scott Cummings reminisced about his 10 goals against Fremantle in 2000

Fremantle Assistant Coach Michael Prior told us what they expect to see from their young side.
