Bob Maumill: Profile

Bob Maumill

Bob Maumill describes himself as an 'accidental broadcaster'. Maumill had tried many things before he and radio found each other.

He had worked as a messenger boy, newspaper boy, agricultural laborer, shearing shed hand, stable hand, farriers assistant, drover and ringer, horse trainer and crew member on a Norwegian cargo ship.

It was as guest horse racing tipster that Maumill first spoke on radio. Maumill was in his early thirties, a racing industry knockabout and sometime writer.

Maumill's Aussie accent, earthy approach and philosophies and ideas formed in working class South Fremantle and developed as he wandered Australia and the world, gave him a unique broadcasting style.

Since those early days Bob Maumill has worked successfully at major metropolitan radio and television stations in Sydney and Melbourne, scripted a movie, written newspaper columns and newspaper articles and in 1992 won a RAWARD as Australia's best Current Affairs broadcaster.

Maumill still trains racehorses and his other interests are reading, writing, cooking, watching current affairs television, AFL, and spending time with his wife Sabrina.

Never far from controversy, Maumill was named as the reason why the former Premier of Western Australia Alan Carpenter refused to appear on radio 6PR.

Maumill's quote in response: "Good, he is too thick to sensibly answer questions anyway. Our listeners are a lot smarter than Carpenter."
