What we're talking about

If we have to have a Princess, I like this one

Bob's Blog I am a dead set Republican. Have been from the time I realized our Head of State was a foreigner.

I was, as a young man, incensed that only members of the British Royal Family can, under our present constitution, occupy Australia’s highest office.

Having said that, the fire within me has abated somewhat and I no longer lose sleep over things I cannot change.

Which brings me to Princess Anne.

Queen Elizabeth’s daughter has often received bad press. Anne does not abide fools. Especially media fools, and her outspoken comments on press behavior and her aloof attitude and refusal to do what she once described as “stunts” to get press coverage, has meant a less than warm and enthusiastic portrayal of Princess Anne by most media organizations.

No glamorous front covers for style magazines, no true romance stories, no glitzy features. That kind of stuff is not for this Princess. Yet she remains stoically impressive. Princess Anne has never radiated warmth and good humour.

Those who come in contact with her as she carries out her regal duties, describe her as friendly, sincere, caring.

The Princess has been touring areas of Victoria which have been devastated by recent bushfires.

Her Royal Highness has drawn much favorable comment for the way in which she has interacted with people in those areas. So moved has she been by what she has seen, the Princess has made a personal donation from her own resources to the bushfire appeal.

I long for the day we become a republic with an Australian as our head of State.

In the mean time I take some comfort from knowing that despite the head line grabbing antics of some of the younger members of the House of Windsor.

Queen Elizabeth the Second and her daughter Princess Anne continue to fulfill their Royal duties with dignity and grace. And the visit of Princess Anne to the areas of Victoria ravaged by the recent fires is further evidence of that.

If we have to have a Princess, I like this one.

Blog comments Your Say

  • the day australia becomes a republic will also be the most anti-climactic moment on record. the fact is it doesn't matter one iota to ordinary australians who the figurehead at the top is. the fact is, this system works great as it is and it is the envy of the world. why change that?
