Nyoongar spokesperson Rob Eggington addresses the media on Herrisonn island.

A spokesperson for the aboriginal tent embassey set up on Heirisson Island has said their protest isn't about money but about saving their culture. Rob Eggington told 6PR he and others were not afraid of police arresting them as they were already spiritually imprisoned.

Blog comments Your Say

  • Why don't we let these "poor" Nyoongar people have some of their traditional land back, but as a trade off they have to give up all handouts. They keep saying money is not important, it is the land.
No more Centrelink handouts. No more family assistant handouts ie Baby bonus, parenting payment, single parent payment, etc. No more free cars, no more cheap loans and no more Homeswest houses. That will certainly ease the burden on the taxpayer and housing shortage then will everyone be happy? Doubt it.How will they cope without money? Do what the rest of us have to do - WORK!

  • There are plenty of laws they don't recognise at Heirisson like no camping, no cars, no fires, etc. How come their kids aren't at school, it is illegal not to send your child to school. Why aren't these people working? They say they don't want money, yet they take the Centrelink handouts from the taxpayer and have a good time slacking off while the rest of us are working. Here is something funny, they can't even spell the name of their precious reserve properly, check out the photos of their banners.

  • How come the "Occupy Perth" brigade don't recognise White Mans law when we try to evict them but have no problem recognising the law that allows them welfare payments? Wake up Australia
