Taxi evasion a problem

Most taxi drivers have dealt with a fare evader.

A recent survey of taxi drivers has shown that 88 per cent of taxi drivers have dealt with fare evaders over the last year. One solution to the problem is forcing passengers to make a deposit up front. Howard Sattler spoke with Taxi Council WA CEO Olwyn Williams.

  • I have also had three accounts over the past year where a taxi fare was completely different to previous days when i had made the exact same trip and the driver could not or would not explain where the additional charges were from. One driver threatening that "I better pay". When i wanted to make a complaint one day and asked for his licence number he pointed to the plaque on the front dash, when i opened the front passenger door to take down the number he drove away while i was still holding the door handle almost knocking me over. With attitudes like this i can see why some people would not want to pay. I hate taking taxis in Australia and only use them as my very last resort, i don't feel safe and worry what issues i will have next time i have never felt this way in any other country. I also feel for the genuinely nice, polite drivers that are out there that are loosing what good reputation taxi drivers once had. Something needs to be done.
