Sheep trade luring sharks

Posted by: 6PR | 18 July, 2012 - 5:10 PM
Are dead sheep in the ocean really the reason for an abnormal number of fatal shark attacks off WA?

The Humane Society International believes there is a connection between WA's recent spate of fatal shark attacks and Fremantle's live sheep exports. Howard Sattler and shark expert Hugh Edwards think this is far fetched and ridiculous.

  • The first thing about science is to keep an open mind and adapt to new information. For someone who proposed the 'rouge shark conspiracy theory' I find it hypocritical to dismiss a link to the live export ship. There is scientific evidence to support sharks being attracted to urine and dead livestock. Plus the recent attacks off Egypt happened .....guess when? Same time a live sheep ship happened to pass by. Why something happens is normally a combination of factors and no link should be dismissed until PROPER scientific investigation has occurred to discount that possibility.

  • I do remember Australian live export boats been involved in the Red Sea attacks in an area rare for large sharks. Mincing the sheep will only make it worse. Large tuna follow boats for god sake. How about tidying up the industry and freezing them. People are dying!

  • There is poor form, and well below that is piggybacking your cause on some poor kids death. Too strong?!! I don't care...that comment is the lowest of the low.

  • These claims could have some truth. If sheep and cattle are being dumped over board when dead on a regular basis around our coastline then of course sharks and other predators will take advantage. This is what happens when a whale dies, the sharks come to feed. Add to this all the fisherman up and down our coastline using their berlie and throwing fish entrails over board and there is a regular easy food supply for sharks. As with Damian's comment I don't think the Humane Society is trying to exploit anyones death to ban live exports. Nothing was mentioned here about banning live exports. Maybe this is all part of sharks evolving to humans habits.

  • I think it was disgraceful for the Humane Society to exploit the death of a man as a means to further their cause of stopping live animal exports. You should be ashamed Humane Society!

  • I can easily see how sharks and other marine predators would be lured to a location for a free feed/easy catch like Perth and Fremantle in this case. I think it is a possibility and should not be fobbed off without some thought and research first. Broome had an abbatoir years ago for cattle and the crocodiles hung around there as there was blood and bits pumped into the ocean.
