Minister's figures wrong

Fremantle's growing vacant housing problem counters the housing ministers promise of improvement.

The Mayor of Fremantle has told 6PR that the Housing Minister's figures regarding vacant public housing decreasing don't add up with vacant stock in his city growing. Paul Murray spoke to Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettit about the problem.

  • The debate raised by the Premier's comment that Homeswest tenants should take more responsibility deserves two responses:
    1) People renting privately are not liable for maintenance, and no one would argue private renters should replace hotwater systems, or roofing tiles etc. Homeswest tenants also have a rental contract and are not liable under that contract for maintenance, so why should people ringing in expect our aged pensioners, disability pensioners and other disadvantaged people have to pay these considerable maintenance costs. And
    2) Surely the Premier can not blame Homeswest tenants for the significant waste of taxpayers money spent on this failed privatisaiton of maintenace?? Your callers ringing in defence of the Premier ought to be angry at the waste of money - but they should direct their anger at this Government, not Homeswest tenants!

  • It's unfortunate that the Mayor of Freo seems to focus a lot more on the unsightliness of Dept of Housing stock there, and the fact that older houses are not being expensively refurbished than he does the fact that the homes are not being able to be lived in by very needy people.

  • Vacant 'stock' around the state has increased by 10% in the last year. The Department House's mantra is that much of the metropolitan vacant 'stock' some like that for years, is because they haven't been refurbished - however many sleep in alley ways, car parks, various squats with most of them condemned.
