Do we need a 30km/h limit?
If 70% of pedestrian deaths from being hit by a car are deemed the fault of the pedestrian then why are experts calling for drivers to slow down. Paul Murray spoke to the Director of Curtain-Monash Accident Research Centre, Brett Hughes about their push to trial 30km/h limits on Perth streets.

If they lowered the speed limit to 30, in 10 years times they would say that 30 is to fast and than we would all end up driving at 20km p/hr

Great Idea, lets reduce the speed limit to 5kph in suburbs and 20 kph on the freeway then there would be no accidents.
Except that its not speed thats doing the killing - bad driving is killing people. Hoon on the freeway this morning, couldn't got very fast because all lanes blocked but he'd see a gap and undertake (overtake on left) across 3 lanes and back. Another guy cut accross four lanes from the right lane to exit a junction about <100m before junction.
Speed is a simplistic answer, ignorance is the reason for most of these accidents ignorance of defensive driving.
Perth driving is frankly rubbish.
More and more cameras everywhere won't stop anything just make us feel more embittered and opressed.Education is the key - of key messages e.g. give way, do unto others, arrive alive, keep a bubble around you, blind spot checks, defensive driving is making allowance for others' mistakes, how to use a roundabout properly, 2 secodn gap etc.
Lowering speed limits is a politician's answer "something must be done" says the public, "this is something" says the politician its cheap, easy and send a message.
We need less speed cameras not more so we spend time looking at the road. On some roads we need higher speeds, not lower, get rid of the stratified traffic let the faster cars move and clear the way making more space for 2 second gap and stop people driving along looking 990% at their speedo (or for cameras) and 10% at road
We need cameras that are VISIBLE deterrents / reminders not STASI secret police that trap you without you KNOWING so you don't modify behaviour. (QLD has good laws on this as does EU)

Ridiculous!!! Who are these fools that come up with these things. Don't they have anything better to do?
No doubt these are the same dopes who say we can't discipline our children or take photos of our families at the beach.
Morons!
