Can cousins marry?

Posted by: Paul Entwistle | 27 April, 2012 - 7:45 AM
An Australian geneticist has given the scientific green light for cousins to marry.

....well according to Australian geneticist Alan Bittles, it's genetically ok for first cousins to get hitched. Steve Mills spoke to Alan whos research challenges long held beliefs that being related before marriage will lead to genetic defects in children.

Blog comments Your Say

  • Lysa, your comments are valid but have nothing to with cousin marriage.

  • Going back for many years the english gentry ,greeks ,egyptians etc married sisters ,cousins etc. However this is not right and should never be allowed .When will people stop this continual want and need to be more involved with sex , and things that are not right. The society already has lost it's foundations for self respect .People show this every day. They have no self respect and therefore they are abusive to others.I am in no way a prude but if people out there think that a society without respect for each other is good then they need to look closely at themselves. Children are being taught that it's ok to be rude back at people for the smallest of wrongs. They are taught that they have a right to say anything to anyone because it's their right . There is not respect in schools for elders , police or themselves and until they have this , then their lives will never be at peace.

  • I don't think this should happen but by the same token they should not be criminalised or vilified for this.

  • I think most people are fairly narrow minded with this subject and I feel sorry for people who are related and want to marry in Australia because of this. In Australia you can marry your cousin, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew, but not a direct descendant or ancestor, eg your father, mother, child or sibling. People in Britain and other countries have been doing this for a long time. There are plenty of stats on the internet on this subject. Many children have been born with defects, etc and their parents have not been related anyway.
