10 Top BBQ Tips for Australia Day

10 Top Tips to Host the Best Aussie Day BBQ

  1.     Prime location: Choose a scenic location for the BBQ celebrations – backyards, riverside, beachside or parks are ideal.

  2.     Get in the Aussie spirit: Decorate your BBQ location with Aussie flags, colours and decorations, and play some good old Aussie tunes.

  3.     Crank up the BBQ: Have a good BBQ with strong controllable heat. Preheat the BBQ properly before you start cooking to get that lovely BBQ flavor through the meat. This also helps if you’ve been a bit slack in the cleaning department.

  4.     Cook local produce: Australia Day aims to celebrate all that this great country offers, so eating local produce is a perfect way to rejoice. Lamb chops/cutlets/sausages/steaks are great for the occasion. Ensure you have enough to feed all your family and friends and probably the neighbours too as they’ll get drawn to the sensational BBQ smell!

  5.     Ensure the meat is room temperature: If your meat has been sitting in the fridge, bring it back to room temperature before you put it on the BBQ -don’t cook it cold. This will help get the heat from the outside of the meat into the middle without scorching the surface of the meat.

  6.     Don’t poke and prod: To get the ultimate caramelised BBQ crust, it takes time to develop and this won’t happen if you’re continually flipping the meat. It’s best to only turn once or twice. Also, ensure you don’t squash the meat down as this forces the juices to run out and leaves you with dry meat. Piercing sausages also dries them out, so they are best to be left alone to sizzle.

7.     Let the meat rest: To ensure your meat remains moist, tender and juicy, let it ‘rest’ for approximately 2 to 3 minutes before serving. When meat is being cooked, the juices are forced towards the centre of the meat. Allowing the meat to rest away from the heat allows the juices, to redistribute and reabsorb evenly. Consequently, the meat will loose less juice when you cut it and be far more tender and juicy.

8.     Claim rights to be the Tong Master: The Tong Master controls what goes onto the BBQ, when it gets turned or flipped, how the meat is arranged, the temperature and when it is ready. An Aussie apron, hat and big set of tongs will certainly make you look the part.

9.     Aussie accompaniments: Ensure there are plenty of salads, crackers and dip, bread, sauce, and cold drinks on ice.
